A FILM BY ROB HERRING & RYAN WIRICK
Executive Produced and Narrated by Rosario Dawson
Earth Conscious Film's first feature-length documentary The Need To GROW is a solution-packed, story-driven journey into the lives of those working to fix our broken food system.
Feeding our own species is arguably the most environmentally destructive human activity, but does it need to be? Can we feed the world without destroying it? And if so, how? What's the hold up?
In the 21st century, the average bite of food is sprayed with toxic chemicals, grown in unhealthy soil, picked too early, and shipped too far. Almost half of it is never eaten, yet hunger still exists, and most people are malnourished from birth. Pesticides and chemical fertilizers are causing ecocidal dead zones. Food seed varieties are going extinct. Bees are dying off. We are facing historic water shortages, peak oil, and worse yet, we are destroying the Earth's topsoil at a suicidal rate.
70% of the Earth's farmmable soil is gone. If things don't change drastically, we are on track to run out of topsoil in about 60 years, along with any chance at reversing climate change. By any measure, solving food should be an all-hands-on-deck moment for our species. The clock is ticking...
For over 3 years we followed stories from across North America, and through their diverse, yet interconnected struggles and triumphs, The Need To GROW shines a light on an emerging food ecosystem that has the potential to feed the world without destroying our only habitat—Earth.
We can grow more food, in less space, with less water and no toxic chemicals, anywhere in the world. From cutting edge technologies that regeneratively work with nature, to ancient practices that anyone can bring to their community, the solutions needed to decentralize our food system, while reversing climate change, are already here. But will we act in time? It's up to us.
